Shield Engineering’s Environmental Group is seeking a geologist/environmental scientist with 5-10 years of experience. We are seeking a motivated “A-Player” who could immediately begin contributing to Shield’s vision and growth. The candidate should be a well-rounded professional who has deep consulting experience in the various NC and SC environmental regulatory programs relating to Assessment and Remediation as well as Phase I/II for property transactions.

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills who has a track record for developing loyal clients. He or she must have a strong desire and ability to bring in new work and grow a portfolio of projects.

The ideal candidate will be a licensed professional geologist or is within one year of obtaining licensure in NC and SC. Most of Shield’s work is in the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia. We are seeking experienced CMT Technicians for residential, forensic, commercial, earthwork and landfill CQA/CQC projects. Must enjoy working outdoors and traveling. This position is an hourly position located in our Charlotte, NC headquarters, reporting to our Geotechnical Department Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interact with clients and contractors
  • Prepare field inspection/testing reports
  • Perform field/lab inspections and materials testing (concrete, masonry, grout, soil)
  • Provide technical support for construction quality control activities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • ACI certification and Nuclear Density Gauge preferred

The Geotechnical/Structural Engineer position requires a minimum of a Bachelor or Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering with course work in Soil Mechanics, Foundation, and Structural Engineering.  Experience levels require a minimum of 3-5 years Geotechnical / Structural experience.  Professional registration (E.I.T. or P.E.) is required.  Prospective hires must have excellent verbal, written, and communication skills. Familiarity with various commercial geotechnical and structural engineering software and laboratory testing is a plus.

GEOTECHNICAL/STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING SERVICES: 

Subsurface soil investigation, geologic investigations, foundation investigations, slope stability analysis, pile static and dynamic analysis, pile/caisson/foundation load tests, retaining wall design,  soil nailing design, pavement field evaluation and design, value engineering, failure investigations, and structural design and analysis including timber, steel, and reinforced concrete structures.

DUTIES:

Duties include periodic site visits and reconnaissance, plan, co-ordinate fieldwork,  guide other field engineering staff/technicians to execute the fieldwork, review field data and samples, assign and review laboratory tests, perform analyses, prepare geotechnical report,  coordination with engineering technicians, staff engineers, clients, government agencies, and subcontractors, occasional construction monitoring.  Minor administration duties, e.g., writing purchase orders, reviewing subcontractors’ invoices, quality control check of final reports, etc., are required, including any other duties as required.

Continuing education in the form of seminars, in-house or out of the office training, and self-study for long-term career commitment are required.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT:

Project Engineer position leads to Senior Engineer position upon professional registration and demonstration of capability to handle senior-level responsibilities and technical expertise. The Project Engineer and/or Senior Engineer will have the opportunity to explore and grow a group in certain areas of work.

Shield Engineering, Inc. (Shield) is seeking a NC PE with 7 to 10 years of engineering experience in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Services, Industrial Facility Support in our Charlotte, NC office.  The ideal candidate will perform project procurement, execution and project management duties associated with water distribution, wastewater collection, wastewater treatment, stormwater management and analysis, and a variety of other environmental and civil engineering disciplines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the engineering department with responsibility for project delivery and finances with strong interaction with clients in multiple disciplines, from environmental to civil areas.
  • Independently manage engineering projects associated with a variety of specialty areas, i.e. stormwater, wastewater treatment, environmental sampling.
  • Independently develop proposals, scope of work, and report documents for review by senior engineering staff.
  • Independently perform field work at a very high level of accuracy, consistency and repeatability.
  • Work closely with a team of senior level engineers and scientist to evaluate project needs and results to provide clients with the highest possible level of service, support and solutions to meet environmental regulatory requirements.
  • Support other staff in project level duties.
  • Prepare project reports.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7 – 10 years of experience
  • BS in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field
  • North Carolina Professional Engineer licensure required
  • Knowledge of and experience with domestic and industrial wastewater treatment
  • Knowledge of stormwater management and regulations
  • Knowledge of water treatment preferred
  • Knowledge of groundwater remediation and hazardous waste regulations a plus
  • Experience using Microsoft programs suite, including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Experience and knowledge of Auto CAD preferred, familiarity with Micro Station a plus
  • Knowledge and experience with NPDES permitting and CWA regulations
