Residential Bunker Design
Shield was involved with the construction of an approximately 580 square foot, below-grade bunker from the conceptual phase to the design phase and finished with the permit application phase. During the conceptual phase of the project, Shield performed a geotechnical evaluation to determine the suitability of the proposed foundation soils and provide soil parameters pertinent to the design of the proposed structure as well as provided a feasibility assessment to aid in the client’s decision to proceed with the project or not. During the design phase, Shield developed civil plans including site layout, grading and structural plans. The structural aspect of the project included the design of a concrete roof, a steel beam with intermediate column supports and footings to support the concrete roof, soil overburden and yard live loads, and reinforced concrete foundation walls to resist the anticipated lateral earth pressures. The design plans included waterproofing, dewatering, backfilling and final grading details. Shield prepared a set of specifications including bid documents to send to contractors, along with the plans, for the bidding process.
Shield’s multi-disciplined team allowed for the client to contract with one firm to provide the various aspects and needs of the project to produce the desired bunker.
